He later worked as a senior civil servant and an investment banker.
Early career
Macron served as deputy secretary-general to President François Hollande from 2012 to 2014 and as minister of economics and finance from 2014 to 2016. As economics minister, he led several business-friendly reforms. He resigned in 2016 to launch a presidential campaign under the centrist movement En Marche. He has been a member of Renaissance since founding that party in 2016.
Presidency
He took office on 14 May 2017 after winning the 2017 French presidential election. At age 39, he was the youngest president in French history and the youngest French head of state since Napoleon. He was reelected in the 2022 French presidential election.
Political position
Macron describes himself as a centrist and liberal. His political approach has been referred to as Macronism. Some members of the yellow vest movement have accused him of being an ultra-liberal president for the rich.
Role in protests
During French street protests involving students, workers, and yellow vest demonstrators, Macron condemned violence in the streets. His government responded to the protests with a temporary package of substitute teachers.
