The 2018 Ethiopia–Eritrea peace agreement was reached at a summit in Asmara on 8–9 July 2018. On 9 July, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed signed a joint declaration.
The declaration formally ended the countries’ border conflict, restored full diplomatic relations and agreed to reopen their borders to people, goods and services. It followed decades of conflict, including the 1998–2000 Eritrean–Ethiopian War and a prolonged border standoff.
The agreement is cited in later calls for dialogue between the two countries amid renewed tensions.
