2026 Mauritius unrest

A series of protests and unrest in Mauritius over water shortages and rising living costs, intensified by the police shooting and wounding of a protester.

The 2026 Mauritius unrest was a series of protests and violent incidents in Mauritius over water shortages and the rising cost of living. Protests began in October and intensified after a police officer shot and wounded a 27-year-old woman in Camp Levieux. The officer was taken into custody while police investigated the shooting.

Authorities imposed a curfew and extended it for two additional nights, increased police deployments and road checkpoints, and established a process to fast-track cases. Police reported dozens of arrests, including minors. Schools were closed for two days, and some exams were postponed.

The protests came amid declining reservoir levels and rising inflation. The government announced emergency water measures, including drilling boreholes and deploying water tankers. It also restricted the sale of fuel in portable containers.
