AI-powered road-safety cameras use artificial intelligence to review captured images and flag potential offences. In a West Midlands trial, they were used to identify possible seatbelt and mobile-phone offences.
The trial took place over two weeks in March outside Ladywood and Fallings Park fire stations in Birmingham and Wolverhampton. It identified almost 19,000 potential offences. The trial was funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority in partnership with police and the fire service.
No enforcement was planned as a result of the trial. Its purpose was to assess the potential scale of mobile-phone use while driving and failures to use seatbelts and child restraints. Police and regional officials said they were evaluating the results to consider whether the technology could be used in future enforcement.
