The Alberta independence referendum is a question in the province’s October 19, 2026, referendum. Voters are asked whether Alberta should remain in Canada or take steps toward a future binding referendum on separation.

The vote is not itself a referendum on independence: a vote for the separation path would start steps toward a later vote. Alberta separatism has been associated with concerns about the province’s influence in Ottawa, its distinct political and cultural identity, and federal economic policy, particularly concerning petroleum and equalization payments.
