Ban Keun Airport

A jointly operated airport and military facility near Vientiane, Laos, run by Laos and China.

Ban Keun Airport is an airport and military facility near Vientiane, Laos, jointly operated by Laos and China. It was formerly known as Lima Site 44 and is about 50 kilometers north of the Laotian capital.

China’s Ministry of Defense has described the facility’s China–Laos Joint Support and Training Center and Friendship Aviation Academy as supporting training for Laotian air force pilots. At the time of reporting, satellite imagery showed a runway about 2,000 meters long, a parallel taxiway and parking space for around two dozen aircraft. The runway could accommodate fighter aircraft, and imagery indicated room for a possible extension.

China has not publicly said whether it will permanently station aircraft or crews at the facility. Its potential future use and expansion have drawn attention from neighboring countries and defense analysts.
