Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

A national park in East Java, Indonesia, encompassing Mount Bromo, the Tengger Sand Sea and Mount Semeru.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is a protected area in East Java, Indonesia. It lies around the Tengger mountain region and includes Mount Bromo, the Tengger Sand Sea and Mount Semeru.

The park contains the caldera of the ancient Tengger volcano and several later volcanic cones. Mount Semeru, at 3,676 meters, is the highest mountain on Java. The Tengger Sand Sea, which has been protected since 1919, is a distinctive expanse of volcanic sand within the park.

The area is also associated with the Tenggerese people, a Javanese subgroup whose communities are centered in the surrounding mountains and who maintain Hindu religious and cultural traditions. Mount Bromo is both an active volcano and a Hindu pilgrimage site, and the area is a major tourist destination in East Java.

Bromo Tengger Semeru was declared a national park in 1982. In the news report, a wildfire in the park’s Mentigen and Pusung Lingker areas in Probolinggo regency killed four members of a firefighting team and seriously injured two others.
