Cornell 7 case

A civil lawsuit arising from allegations that seven members of Cornell University's Chi Phi fraternity sexually assaulted a student at a party in 2024.

The Cornell 7 case refers to allegations by a former Cornell University student, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, that seven members of the university’s Chi Phi fraternity drugged and gang-raped her at the fraternity house in October 2024. The seven men deny wrongdoing. The allegations have not been established in court.

Doe reported the incident to Cornell University Police on November 8, 2024. According to research on the case, the district attorney declined to present it to a grand jury after receiving a summary of her police interview. Cornell later conducted a Title IX investigation and hearings. Two students were expelled, the Chi Phi chapter was closed and barred from campus, and other students received disciplinary sanctions.

In September 2026, Doe filed a civil lawsuit against the seven men, Cornell, the Chi Phi chapter, her sorority and others. The suit alleges that she suffered serious physical and psychological harm and that Cornell failed to protect her and respond appropriately. A criminal investigation was subsequently reopened, according to news reports.

Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff apologized for the harm Doe suffered and announced plans to suspend fraternity parties for the remainder of the academic year, add sexual-assault investigators to campus police, and improve support for survivors. Her lawyer has also said that her family’s home was targeted in a swatting incident amid threats and efforts to reveal her identity online.
