Emma Pomeroy is a biological anthropologist at the University of Cambridge. She was the lead author of a report examining the remains of Shanidar A, a Neanderthal found in Iraq’s Shanidar Cave.
Pomeroy said injuries to Shanidar A’s teeth may have made eating and drinking difficult during recovery, and that the individual may have needed care from other group members. The remains also showed a shoulder-blade wound that researchers interpreted as evidence of violence.
