The European Commission is the executive body of the European Union. It has 27 commissioners, one from each member state, who are bound to represent the interests of the EU as a whole. Its administrative departments are called Directorates-General.
The Commission proposes legislation for the EU. In negotiations over the bloc’s 2028–2034 long-term budget, it made the opening proposal. The Commission has criticized a subsequent proposal that would cut the budget, saying the reductions could weaken the EU’s ability to act together.
