Federico Veronesi is an Italian photographer. His photograph The Aftermath, showing a mother elephant carrying her dead calf, won the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year grand prize and the Behaviour: Mammals category.

Veronesi took the photograph while tracking elephants in Namibia’s Huab River Valley. He noticed drag marks in the dry riverbed and then encountered the elephant family.
