Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

The United Kingdom government department responsible for foreign affairs, international representation and development policy.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), commonly called the Foreign Office, is the United Kingdom government ministry responsible for foreign affairs.

It was created on 2 September 2020 through the merger of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development. Its responsibilities include representing and promoting British interests internationally.

The department is headed politically by the secretary of state for foreign, Commonwealth and development affairs, commonly known as the foreign secretary.

In the context of incidents involving British nationals overseas, the FCDO may provide consular assistance. Following the Channel Tunnel collision in France, a department spokesperson said it was following reports and stood ready to assist any British nationals involved.
