Janaya Walker is the interim director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition (EVAW), a UK campaign group. In this role, she has commented on public policy related to violence against women and girls.
In response to the UK government’s announcement that pornography depicting strangulation and incestuous relationships will be banned from 6 November, Walker said the ban was “an important step towards tackling the normalisation of violence against women and girls” and the result of years of campaigning by EVAW and other experts. She noted that strangulation can cause serious, lasting harm and even death, and that its widespread portrayal in pornography risks normalising such violence in sexual relationships, particularly among young people. She also called on the government to ensure the ban is effectively enforced and to update the Online Safety Act so that online platforms are required to remove this content.
