Lawrence Wong Shyun Tsai, born on 18 December 1972, is a Singaporean politician and former civil servant. He has served as Singapore’s fourth prime minister since 2024 and is a member of the People’s Action Party.

Wong has also served as minister of finance since 2021 and as a Member of Parliament for Marsiling–Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency since 2015. Before entering politics, he worked in several Singapore government ministries, served as principal private secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong from 2005 to 2008, and later led the Energy Market Authority.

In the wildfire and haze crisis described in the news report, Wong called for closer regional cooperation. Singaporean authorities were also investigating companies allegedly linked to forest and peatland fires in Indonesia, with possible action under Singapore’s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act where warranted.
