Mark Joseph Carney (born March 16, 1965) is a Canadian politician and economist. He became Canada’s 24th prime minister in March 2025 and leads the Liberal Party. He has represented Nepean in the House of Commons since his election in April 2025.
Before entering elected politics, Carney worked at Goldman Sachs and held senior roles in Canada’s public service and central banking. He was governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, overseeing monetary policy during the global financial crisis, and governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
As prime minister, Carney leads the government’s decisions on defence procurement. In the helicopter purchase reported in the news, his government paused plans to acquire 16 U.S.-made Black Hawk helicopters for special forces while reviewing procurement options amid trade and diplomatic tensions with the United States. The government has also made boosting domestic defence production and partnerships with foreign firms operating in Canada a priority.
