Micheál Martin is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has served as Taoiseach, Ireland’s head of government, since January 2025. He has led Fianna Fáil since 2011 and has represented Cork South-Central in Dáil Éireann since 1989.
During Ireland’s rotating presidency of the European Union, Martin was involved in negotiations over the bloc’s 2028–2034 long-term budget. Ireland proposed a budget of €1.62 trillion, a plan criticized by countries seeking lower contributions and by others seeking to protect funding for agriculture and poorer regions. Martin described the negotiations as a difficult balancing exercise.
