Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez is a Salvadoran politician and the 43rd president of El Salvador. He took office in 2019. Before becoming president, he served as mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán and later as mayor of San Salvador.

Bukele launched a nationwide crackdown on gangs in 2022 under a state of emergency. He has defended the measure as necessary to curb gang violence. Human rights groups have criticized the emergency over alleged arbitrary arrests and other reported harms.

Bukele has announced a plan to review cases and potentially release, with monitoring, up to half of those detained under the emergency. He has not provided details of how the reviews would work and has said he intends to end the emergency eventually.
