The roof of the private Al-Khair school in Peshawar, Pakistan, collapsed on 15 October 2026. Initial news reports said at least 28 children and a teacher were killed and more than 50 people injured. Another account gave the death toll as 34 children and a teacher. The children killed or injured were reported to be 13 or younger.
Rescue workers and local residents searched the rubble and removed those trapped. The injured were treated at Lady Reading Hospital, which declared an emergency. Police said the school building was structurally weak, and the provincial government formed a committee to investigate the cause. The school’s owner was arrested. One account said heavy rain beforehand may have contributed, but the cause had not been established in the news reports.
The collapse prompted calls for an investigation and for school buildings to meet safety standards.
