The Saudi-led intervention in Yemen began on 26 March 2015, when Saudi Arabia led a coalition of nine countries from West Asia and North Africa into the Yemeni civil war at the request of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.
The intervention followed the Houthi takeover of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and a subsequent offensive that pushed toward southern Yemen. Hadi fled Yemen shortly before the coalition began military operations.
The opening phase was called Operation Decisive Storm and involved airstrikes and a blockade. In April 2015, the coalition announced Operation Restoring Hope, which it described as combining political, diplomatic and military measures.
The intervention became a defining part of the wider Yemeni civil war and was followed by an ongoing armed conflict between Houthi forces and Saudi Arabia, including fighting and attacks along and across the Saudi-Yemeni border.
