Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by Starlink Services, LLC, a telecommunications subsidiary of the American aerospace company SpaceX. Launched in 2019, the network operates through thousands of mass-produced satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) that communicate with designated ground stations and user terminals to deliver broadband internet access worldwide.
In addition to civilian internet access and in-flight connectivity for commercial airlines, Starlink is utilized for government and military communications. A specialized, classified derivative called Starshield is designed specifically for military and government clients.
Starlink has played a major strategic role in the Russo-Ukrainian war, providing critical communications infrastructure for Ukrainian civilian networks, defense operations, and unmanned drone guidance systems. During the conflict, access and operational parameters have at times been subjected to restrictions that impact long-range drone missions and air defense operations.
