State Bar of California

The California body responsible for licensing attorneys and regulating the practice of law in the state.

The State Bar of California is an administrative division of the Supreme Court of California. It licenses attorneys and regulates the practice of law in California. The State Bar manages admission to practice and investigates complaints of professional misconduct; attorney admissions are issued as recommendations that are routinely ratified by the Supreme Court.

In reporting on questions about Katie Zacharia’s legal credentials, a State Bar spokesperson said the agency had no record of Kate Sharon Zacharia, Kate Sharon Black, or versions of those names having been licensed to practice law in California. The watchdog group Campaign for Accountability filed a complaint asking the State Bar to investigate whether Zacharia had misrepresented herself as a lawyer. The agency said it could not confirm whether it had received the complaint or was investigating, citing confidentiality laws.

The State Bar was legally established in 1927.
