Stillbirth is generally used when a baby is born without signs of life after the pregnancy has reached a specified stage. The threshold varies by source, commonly 20 or 28 weeks of pregnancy.
The cause is often unknown. Possible causes include complications during pregnancy or birth, problems with the placenta or umbilical cord, birth defects and infections. Stillbirth is distinct from miscarriage, which refers to an earlier pregnancy loss.
