The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is a political and armed organization founded in February 1975 in Dedebit, in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is also known as the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front and by the names Woyane or Weyané.
The TPLF sought to overthrow Ethiopia’s central government and advance its own version of the Ethiopian revolution; it did not seek Tigray’s independence. From 1988 to 2018, it led the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, a political coalition that governed Ethiopia.
The TPLF was a central party to the 2020–2022 war in Tigray. In the renewed fighting reported in 2026, the group announced its withdrawal from Mekelle as government-allied fighters entered the city.
