Ulf Kristersson

Swedish politician, leader of the Moderate Party and prime minister of Sweden since 2022, serving in a caretaker capacity following the 2026 general election.

Ulf Hjalmar Kristersson (born 29 December 1963) is a Swedish politician who has led the Moderate Party since 2017. He became prime minister of Sweden in October 2022 and has served in a caretaker capacity since September 2026 following the defeat of his governing bloc in the 2026 general election.

Kristersson previously served as minister for social security from 2010 to 2014 and has been a member of the Riksdag since 2014, having also served there from 1991 to 2000. After the 2022 general election, he formed a minority coalition government comprising the Moderate Party, Christian Democrats and Liberals, supported by the Sweden Democrats under the Tidö Agreement.

During his premiership, Sweden completed its accession to NATO, increased defence spending and expanded support for Ukraine. His government also pursued a more restrictive migration policy.

In the 2026 general election, opposition parties secured a narrow parliamentary majority. Kristersson subsequently announced his resignation, and his cabinet became a caretaker government while negotiations over the formation of a new government proceeded.

In European Union budget negotiations, Kristersson opposed the proposed 2028–2034 long-term budget, describing it as too large and expensive. He said the proposal would increase Sweden’s net contribution by almost 60% and called that increase unacceptable.
